Event Information
Destination NSW, the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the Museum of Contemporary Art are pleased to present the Sydney International Art Series 2011-12, a key event on the NSW Events Calendar, bringing the world’s most outstanding exhibitions to Australia.
The Art Gallery of New South Wales will host Picasso: Masterpieces from the Musée Picasso, Paris, the most significant exhibition of Picasso’s art ever held in Australia, between 12 November 2011 - 25 March 2012.
Picasso: Masterpieces from the Musée National Picasso, Paris is the most ambitious exhibition ever undertaken by the Gallery. Jointly organised by Musée National Picasso, the Art Gallery of New South Wales and Art Exhibitions Australia (AEA), the exhibition is part of the Sydney International Arts Series, bringing the world’s most outstanding exhibitions to Australia.
The Museum of Contemporary Art presents Rafael Lozano-Hemmer: Recorders between 16 December 2011 – 12 February 2012. This large-scale solo exhibition presents interactive pieces that involve the public as an integral part of the artwork.
In “Recorders”, artworks hear, see or feel the public; they exhibit awareness and record and replay memories entirely obtained during the show. The pieces either depend on participation to exist or predatorily gather information on the public through surveillance and biometric technologies.
The exhibition is meant to oscillate between the seduction of participation, preservation and inclusion, and the violence of Orwellian and ubiquitous computerized detection. In all cases the artwork compiles a database of behaviours that then becomes the artwork itself.
Both events are exclusive to the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney.
