Event Information
Sydney Mardi Gras began as a pride event, but came to define the embracing and diverse city of Sydney. It remains the world’s most famous showcase of the diversity of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex communities, but has become a broader showcase of the power and beauty of diversity.
Only Sydney has taken its pride event so firmly to its heart, making it the biggest party of the year. Tens of thousands are part of the Parade itself. Hundreds of thousands fill the streets to get a glimpse, whether from the street or one of the premium viewing areas on offer. Meanwhile many more at home get a sense of the excitement on TV, but nothing beats being there!
The Dykes on Bikes kick off proceedings by tradition and are followed by more than one hundred groups with favourites including the gorgeous Livesavers with Pride, ADF, Asian Marching Boys, Thai’d Together, Rainbow Babies and Oz Fag Hags. Stunning floats, amazing costumes and a heap of satire make it an electric procession.
The Parade then moves on to the massive Mardi Gras Party. This second round of fun has a carnival atmosphere as well as four big dance venues, huge theatrical shows, a stellar DJ and entertainment line-up as well as all the colour of the Parade that’s just gone. No wonder thousands fly in from all over the world to be part of this uniquely creative party.
The Parade and Party night are only the high point of a fun-packed three-week festival that showcases the very best of Sydney in summertime, from the drag races on Bondi Beach to Harbour Party and arts and culture in Sydney’s great iconic venues.
