In 2012 Surfest will celebrate its 27th year and continue its status as Australia’s largest festival of surfing with over 700 surfers contesting 10 events over 12 days of red-hot competition. Some of the world’s best professional surfers will return to Newcastle to battle it out for the prestigious Mark Richards Trophy in the Burton Toyota Pro, and join the honour roll of past champions including Kelly Slater, Tom Curren, Mick Fanning and Tom Carroll. A six-star Women’s ASP World Tour Star Event and an internationally rated Pro Junior Event will also be contested over the 12 days of competition. Surfest will again run at the fabled right-handers that peel down the rock and sand bottom off Merewether Beach, Newcastle. Ideal conditions at Merewether see southerly swells fanned by north-west winds barreling through from third reef, providing rides where a surfer's ability can be fully demonstrated to crowds gathered in the natural amphitheatre.
