Event Information
The Grand Prix series is a singles and doubles competition open to all badminton players who are members of their respective country affiliated to the Badminton World Federation (BWF). In addition to the prize monies, players also earn points towards their World Ranking according to the classification of these tournaments.
The Australian Open has been the most prestigious event in Badminton Australian (BA) calendar since its original ‘Silver Bowl’ days back in the 1970s. With the Title sponsorship coming from Yonex Co. Ltd, the Australian Open was upgraded to Grand Prix status in 2009. The 2009 and 2010 events were GP events and the 2010 event was GP Gold.
Yonex Co. Ltd has confirmed their continued Title sponsorship of the Australian Open and is named the Yonex Australian Open.
With the support of DestinationNSW, the Yonex Australian Open has found a new home in Sydney. The 2012 Yonex Australian Open GP Gold will carry the highest prize money (US$120,000) of any event played in the Oceania region.
